REJECTED

Well the phone interview is over. I was rejected within 20 minutes.

I'm awesome.

I really don't understand what this company wants. I should have interviewed there when I was 21 because my ability to answer monkey questions was much higher. This job was open to BS/BA, MS or PhD is a wide variety of fields (from accounting, to physics, to chemistry.....). With the questions they asked me it seemed obvious they actually wanted a BS in Computer Science who has no real world experience, is not currently working on a 600 person collaboration, has not given NUMEROUS presentations at conferences. They are a well established company so they can pick and choose who they want to hire. I just think they should put BS in computer science ont he job description because that is obviously what they were looking for. Or look outside the freakin' box.

I really feel like they missed out (everyone says this if they are rejected from a job). It's just frustrating that all the work I have done here is not equal to sitting through CS classes and graduating and being able to giv definitions to computer science terms. I am so worried that Jason and I will not be able to find a job because we don't have enough of ANY 1 skill. I can program, I can think analytically, I can solve problems, I can learn fast. Really who wouldn't want to hire me.

Frustration.

I barely slept last night worrying about the interview, we'll leave the lab here around 2 since we got here at 6 am (!!!). Run a couple miles and then maybe to Bernies to get beers and eat burgers (yum)

Don't fret about one interview, especially a telephone one. You will be fine. Burgers and beers now that is a great idea!

There are more companies and more jobs. This is lika a marathon, and you're only on the first miles. Just continue looking for jobs, and it will appear!!

oooh good one! I am trying to look for jobs that will want my random variety of skills not just one line of one part of one project.

thanks!

Don't lose any more sleep over that silly interview. Looks like that company isn't what you were looking for anyway.

And thanks a lot for the uplifting comments on my blog. I think all the good vibes are working.

One of my jobs that I interviewed for when we moved to NJ was a web developer for the XFL (the short lived football league). At the time, I was disappointed that they didn't hire me, but in the long run, I'm much better off. I've been in my current job 5 years and I'm happy.

So, not to be annoyingly optimistic, but things have a way of working out--a better job may be just around the corner.

I am pretty sure I don't want to work for a company that can't look outside the box. So in the end it couldn't have been the right company for me to work for. I have still probably about 9 months before my degree is finished anyways so I have lots of time to look around. Plus this gives me time to define my skill set and better the skills that I do have....AND find that company that does want me. hodgepodge of skills that I am :-)

Thanks for the comments! and Thomas, glad you are feeling better!

seriously, and not just to give you the ol' "pat-on-the-back" comment:

not getting one job doesn't mean you and jason will never get a job! with all that schooling i'm sure you have some skills someone wants. (maybe you'll get a job where you can create "nerdy" graphs from spreadsheets!)

I'll join the rest of the pack...
Try not to worry about it. (I know, not an easy thing) They're dumb not to snatch you up, and some other company will be glad you were rejected this time so that they can have the chance to hire you.
